Today in this review of the abu cardinal x combo, I'm going to be breaking the mould.
This is a spinning rod, rated at 10-30g, with a 3 ball bearing, 2:1 reel gear ratio and is designed to be casting lures and spinners.
Well I didn't want to do that! I wanted to use it on the River Mersey as a beach caster. I know this sounds stupid but I love to fish light and I wanted a rod that was small and light enough to feel the smallest of fish but tough enough to handle the fierce currents that flow through the River Mersey.
In the past I have used a quiver tip and that was really good fun but was far too light really for what I needed. Check out the video below and you'll see what I mean.

Anyway, I loaded the reel with 30lb spider braid and fished straight through to my rig. I used 3 & 4oz grippers and to put this into context, the rods casting weight is 30g max, a 4 oz lead is 115g 😂.
It didn't seem to bother the rod at all, casting out a good 30 yards into the current. I'll be honest, I was worried about retrieval but there was no need to worry, as it wound in with fish and weight in tow with ease.
I caught plenty of small fish in the session but unfortunately didn't get the chance to retrieve anything any bigger. However, I'm confident the cardinal combo would handle a bigger fish easily.
For the tackle tarts it comes in a lovely red and black design and tipped off with my blue spider braid it just looked the part.
The Abu Garcia Cardinal combo 10-30g will set you back anywhere between £60-£70. In my opinion it's a must weapon to have in the arsenal.
Feel free to have a watch of my little review video and see the Abu cardinal in action.
