When you think of the river mersey what do you picture? A nice walk either down the wirral / liverpool promenades. The perfect place to do a spot of sea fishing, maybe in the summer months go for a little paddle? Well, the river mersey, its beaches and the bay at its mouth can house some serious dangers and she isn't as gentle and safe as some are led to believe.
The River Mersey has a serious tidal flow and its height changes weekly. The higher she is the more dangerous she becomes.
Firstly lets look back at 05/12/2013 . It was a massive spring tide to my memory it was around the 10m mark. The weather conditions where just right for the perfect storm hitting Newbrighton.
Weather warnings had been issued and the coastal road closed off.
But that didn't stop people venturing down to see her in all her glory.
It was around 12 noon as the high tide hit. on shore winds reaching 80mph. She was that powerful some of the waves were thought to reach over 10 meters high.
She burst over the sea defenses and flooded the entire promenade leaving cars deserted, filled up to their windows. Morrison's and the surrounding shops where reported to have 3 foot of water in their premises.
This has to be one of the worst floods Newbrighton promenade has seen in years and it was safe to say I didn't go sea fishing that day.
Check out this short video of the waves smashing over the wall and causing no end of issues for the cars trying to flee.
